The plight of millions of Zimbabweans and Congolese (DRC) has made headlines around the world. In Zimbabwe a political stalemate has caused untold hardships for innocent people. From stratospheric inflation rates to a cholera epidemic, complete collapse of the national economy to politically motivated violence and brutality, Zimbabweans face an uncertain future. In DRC, the unbridled quest for mineral resources and activities of militia groups have turned the eastern region of this mineral-rich country into a theatre of war and horrendous atrocities: entire villages have been decimated or displaced, sexual gender-based violence inflicted on the population, human rights and dignity trampled upon. Zimbabweans and Congolese call out to the rest of the world for help.
In response to this dire situation Hekima College is organizing a Lenten Campaign on behalf of Zimbabwe and DRC. The aim of this Lenten Campaign is threefold:
- Generate awareness about the plight of Zimbabweans & Congolese
- Express solidarity with the suffering people of Zimbabwe & DRC and help the recovery and reconstruction effort
- Raise funds to support the effort of local humanitarian organizations in Zimbabwe & DRC
For seven consecutive Fridays during Lent 2009, we will hold Candlelight Prayer & Reflection Service in Hekima College Chapel from 5:00 – 6:00PM. The prayer service is open to all women and men of goodwill. We hope to raise 1 US$ (= 35 Trillion Zimbabwean dollars!!!) for every candle lit.
The proceeds from this Lenten Campaign will go towards direct humanitarian assistance for Zimbabweans and Congolese.
How can you participate?
- Join in praying for Zimbabwe and DRC every Friday of Lent 2009 for a return of peace, justice, dignity, and life to the suffering people of these countries and in other parts of the world.
- Buy as many candles as possible for the Lenten Campaign by sending a donation (a candle is 1U$ = Ksh 75).
- Inform friends and family about the plight of Zimbabwe and DRC and invite them to help.
If you would like to support this Lenten Campaign, please send a check to “Hekima College” (Attn. Lenten Campaign: Fr. A. E. Orobator, SJ) P. O. Box 21215-00505, Nairobi, KENYA.
In past years, Hekima Lenten Campaigns have raised money for drought stricken populations of northern Kenya (2006) and displaced populations of Western Darfur, Sudan (2007), and lead a peace and reconciliation effort in Kenya (2008).
