Now the Congregation is over, awaiting the decrees, the immortalized words of GC 35; more so for their inspiration, but most of all for the emanating universal good deeds (Const #258) of each Jesuit and to an extent from our collaborators and from people of good will. Education is a major priority in Africa and yet, during the presentation of Africa as an apostolic priority to the world wide delegates of the 35th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus, one of the remarks from the delegates that struck me most was “We did not know that Africa has so few Jesuit schools”. We may have more social centres than schools, but it is circumstantial. It is most likely that the difference is a manifestation of the cry for structures of social transformation; no one, faithful to our
tradition, is happy with the status quo. But both, social centres and schools, are in fact agents of change. And yet we have so few. Well, what are the issues at stake here? More in PDF

July - August 2008

In recent years, the Jesuits in Madagascar, as if hearing the instruction of Jesus “Give them something to eat yourselves” (Mt 14:16), are working hard to improve on the methods of food production. One Jesuit is known to have introduced SRI (intensive rice cultivation system), a non-traditional method of rice production which is slowly being accepted. At the current rate of consumption of 135 kilograms per person per annum, one begins to understand the supply and demand ratio. And that the sky seems to be the limit for innovation. Food for all. It is a challenge to the Malagasy nation as it is to the world leaders today; indeed to all of us, especially in this Assistancy. More in PDF


SJ Africa News: Issue no.5
September - October 2008

After six months, from the time GC 35 was concluded, the Presidents of the six designated Conferences of the Major Superiors of the Society of Jesus met with Father General, Adolfo Nicolás, along with some of his Counsellors, for the first time to discuss how they are living GC 35 in the Conferences. During the 4 days meeting, the Presidents had the opportunity to meet with Father General individually and to discuss matters of common interest in their respective Conferences and Assistancies. Today some say there is a dearth of leadership, others say it is the style of leadership that matters: some are appropriate others are not. It is a subject worth reflecting on. What style of leadership do we need for shrinking economies, for the conflict areas, for the marginalized groups, for the illiterate, the poverty stricken communities, the homeless, the lonely, the sick, the HIV /AIDS affected and the downtrodden?
