His homily was centered on the permanent presence of Christ in the everyday life of his disciples. The Good News of the day, drawn from St John (21:1-14), was the appearance of Jesus at the edge of the Lake of Tiberias. The reigning good spirit of co-operation and collaboration initiated by GC 35 needs to be incarnated in real action beyond words. It has to rise above the worldly forces such
as political and socio-economic structures and other evil powers which tend to marginilize the poor and the weak of this world. Already as a positive spirit, GC 35 is surely above these negative tendencies. At the end of the day we hope it is the sacrificial love and generosity that will prevail (Rom 8:37-39)

At the meeting of JESAM in Cape Coast, Ghana last April, the major superiors after careful review, discussions and discernment decided to dissolve the JUAM commission. The decision was taken mindful of two realities which are constantly impacting on our Conference. The first reality is that we are experiencing great difficulty in keeping our current formation institutes of higher education adequately staffed, in spite of the fact that we have taken formation as a priority of the Conference. We realized that at this time we are unable to take on another extensive commitment to higher education such as a Jesuit university. The second reality is that in our provinces and regions, and among our current JESAM institutions, we are seeing developments that are already moving some of these institutions toward the status of university.| more (PDF)
