At the beginning of this new year 2010 we received the news that Father General,
Adolfo Nicolás, has decided, after hearing from the Provincial of Portugal, Fr. Nuno da Silva Gonçalves and from the Provincial of Central Africa, Fr. Ntima Nkanza, to transfer the mission of Angola from Portugal (POR) to the Province of Central Africa (ACE). The mission of Angola will officially become part and parcel of the Province of Central Africa at all levels as of the 2 August 2010 at a ceremony of transfer which will take place in Luanda the day we dedicate to the blessed Peter Favre.| more (PDF)
These two months have been coloured by Assistancy-wide meetings. The bursars of our three common houses, Arrupe College, Hekima College and ITCJ-Abidjan, met in Africama house on the 18 and 19 March 2010 to work on a common chart of accounts. This chart is hoped to be in use in the coming fiscal year. And Fr. Mathieu Ndomba, S.J., the new bursar for ITCJ-Abidjan, and I travelled in time to ITCJ-Abidjan for the annual Board of Governors (BoG) meeting which was scheduled for three days from the 21st of March. After concluding the BoG, I flew east, to Kigali-Rwanda via Nairobi to assist at two important meetings, one of the treasurers (JESTRAM) and the one of the Development Directors (JEDOAM). But due to flight limitations and scheduling, I was only able to meet with some of the treasurers on their last day.| more (PDF)
I returned to Nairobi on 2 June just in time to visit with the three German speaking
procurators Frs Klaus Väthröder (GER), Anton Kurmann (HEL) and Hans Tschiggerl (ASR). And we had ample time to sign two tripartite Assistancy-level memos one on Health and the other on Higher Education. | more (PDF)
...the last days of August were dedicated to preparations for the extraordinary JESAM meeting of early September, 4 to 7. It will be the first time after GC 35 to plan for an
Assistancy Apostolic plan. And obviously the Major Superiors will have to look at the major challenges facing the conference and on how to sustain our common programs in the midst of the global economic down turn. | more (PDF)
Dear Companions, the process we started nearly a year ago has finally come to an end, a happy end, a fruitful end, a happy fruitful end for that matter. There were several
meetings to start with in our common formation houses and works, preceded by individual reflections and on the Assistancy-level ordinary and extraordinary JESAM meetings. Apart from bringing friends in the Lord together, the discussions were rich, and contextualised in space and time, which make the fruitful end a new beginning. | more (PDF)
Soon we will come to the end of this calendar year. And this is our last edition of the SJ Africa News for this year 2010. However, these last two months are fully loaded with great expectations and activities of joy, among other things the ‘birth of the Messiah and celebrations of the new era’.
In the beginning of November along with six companions from Africa we visited Latin America and we were privileged, on the invitation of Fr Ignacio Suñol, to participate in the 41st International Congress of the Fe y Alegría in Quito – Ecuador. The expectations are high as many of us, after this experience, believe even more that education for all is an important key for socio-economic, political and technological development. Many thanks to Very Rev Fr Ernesto Cavassa, the CPAL President for continued support and collaboration especially in this area. | more
