As the name indicates, the Rwanda-Burundi region covers the two countries of Central Africa: Rwanda and Burundi. The region has 70 members. 50 reside in the region of whom 7 are from other provinces. Click here for more information.
The Bishop of Nyundo, Right Rev. Alexis Habiyambire is a member of the Region.
There are 35 Jesuits working in Rwanda, two of whom work with JRS in Byumba refugee camp. As of 2005 the novitiate had 19 novices. The country has three Jesuit residencies:
- Centre Christus Spirutal Center in Kigali
- A Study house for students in Butare
- The Novitiate in Cyangugu
There are 7 Jesuits working in Burundi two of whom work with JRS. Other Jesuits are involved in secondary education at Lycée du Saint-Esprit and others at the Emmaus Spiritual Centre. The School and the Spiritual Centre are in Bujumbura. In 2006, a Burundian Jesuit, Elie Koma, was shot dead on his way back home. R.I.P.
